Nutrition and Whole Food Supplementation

Historically, in Chinese Medicine, practitioners who specialized in dietary therapy were the most highly regarded physicians, because what people eat everyday is one of the most important contributors to health or illness.  Acupuncture Associates of Hartford continues the tradition of recognizing nutrition as one of the most fundamental keys to promoting health, and we utilize the understanding of food from the Chinese Medical perspective in making our dietary recommendations.

Modern challenges are different than in ancient China, however, and we can no longer rely only on food to be healthy.  Because modern life is so busy, and the quality of food that is easily available is poor, nutritional deficiency and chronic degenerative changes have become common in this modern world.  Major factors of life, including increased stress, a diet that no longer resembles what our genetic coding was designed to utilize, and toxic exposure that exceeds our body’s natural ability to detoxify, have led to the need to develop nutritional therapy as a way to support the human body in today’s landscape.

Why Supplement Your Diet?

Why is a whole food supplement essential in today’s diet? The reason is surprising – it’s the change in the quality of our food. Today’s farmed foods are de-vitalized and de-mineralized compared to what they were years ago. This happens for many reasons:

  • Farming methods that do not rejuvenate the soil
  • Chemical farming techniques that contaminate and sterilize the soil
  • Refining methods that remove or destroy nutrients in food
  • Increased use of chemical preservatives
  • Artificial colors and flavors that pollute food
  • The use of irradiation and genetic alteration that damages the biological structure of food
  • The creation of man-made junk non-foods that are often substituted for healthy food
  • Use of agricultural and industrial toxins that contaminate food through pollution of water, air, and land

The Importance of Whole Food Supplements

As a nation, we eat poor-quality foods that have been stripped of nutrients.  The majority of American farm soil has been hopelessly depleted of the nutrients that were present before the advent of petrochemical-based forming in the 1950s.
Refining and packaging of food strips out the nutrients in order to achieve an extended shelf life.  Not even bugs and rats will eat the majority of foods that the average American exists on.
These devitalized foods are now anti-nutrients, in that they require your body to provide the nutrients to metabolize them, that is, to remake yourself with, and to provide you with energy.
We do not consume enough fresh fruits and vegetables.  Many of us get our whole grains from instant rice, refined wheat breads, pastas, and cereal. We eat a tremendous amount of prepackaged, pre-made meals. One-quarter of Americans eat at fast food restaurants each day. Americans are overfed and undernourished.

We eat plenty but we are still starving
The foods we eat are not providing our bodies with the nutrition it needs to survive and be healthy. We are starving our bodies and we are sick. We suffer from diabetes, heart attacks, obesity, and the list goes on and on.

There is good news
Given proper nutrition, the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. If properly fed and given the right nutrients, the human body is designed to repair itself. To do so, we need to eat a healthier diet, exercise, and take high-quality supplements made from whole foods. Whole food supplements supply our bodies with nutrients we are not getting from our diet; they offer all the vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and phytonutrients that foods possess in a way that nature intended, in a whole food form.

What is the Big Difference between Whole Food & Synthetic Vitamins?
In short, the “big” difference is that synthetic is dead and whole food is living. There are some synthetic vitamins that are derived from coal tar, and others from byproducts of materials used in the production of photographic film!  Natural whole food vitamins are as they are found in food – un-tampered with in any way that would change their molecular structure, their biological or biochemical combination, or their actions.
Vitamins in their natural state always exist as living complexes with specific synergistic co-factors, enzymes, phytonutrients, and organic mineral-activators. They do not exist as isolated single factors. A vitamin needs all of its synergists to function. Organic (whole food) sources are preferred since they are more nutrient-dense and contain no pesticide residues.

Only whole food supplements complete the nutritional gap
Whole food supplements are made by concentrating foods for use in supplements. When processed correctly, they supply a multitude of the plant's components. Foods provide nutrients that work synergistically. They work together to provide you with optimal nutrition for good health.

A word of advice: Not all whole food supplements are the same
Many whole food supplements available in today's marketplace range in quality. Companies are riding the wave of supplement popularity rather than focusing on commitment and quality.

We maintain a supply of high quality supplements in our office as a convenience to our clients.
The product line we use most often is from Standard Process, a company formed in 1929, and which utilizes food grown on their own certified organic farm of 1800 acres.  Standard Process manages the entire process, from planting the seed, through to the finished product prepared just a few miles away from the farm.  These supplements are unique in that they target specific systems of the body to help bring them back into balance.  The Standard Process products are available only from health practitioners trained in their use.

In addition to our years of clinical experience, Acupuncture Associates of Hartford utilizes a sophisticated computer analysis program to help focus your nutritional program to your specific health needs.
