What can Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture CTIn the thousands of years acupuncture has been in practice many illnesses and conditions have been treated with the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the human body. This process is known to stimulate movement of energy within the body, allowing natural healing to take place. Originating in China over 3,000 years ago, acupuncture has come to identify 71 meridians, or channels of energy, in the human body that an acupuncturist will use to help alleviate specific conditions and illnesses.

The belief behind acupuncture is that when energy, or Qi, is blocked it causes an imbalance in the natural flow of energy in the body and that this leads to sickness and disease. The aim of acupuncture is to provide the necessary stimulus that will unclog the meridians so the human body can begin to heal itself and return to a normal state of balance. While Western science has been reluctant to embrace acupuncture as a legitimate treatment, recent studies do indicate that the physical stimulus of acupuncture needles causes a response in the human body. When the body detects change it produces a response and this response is now visible proving that acupuncture is not some made-up idea.

Over the years acupuncture has been used to treat many conditions, some with very positive results. Although the success of acupuncture does depend on the skill of the acupuncturist and the patient's attitude towards the procedure, the following conditions have been most often linked with successful treatment through acupuncture:

- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Urogenital disorders
- Gynecological disorders
- Respiratory disorders
- Depression and anxiety
- Addictions
- Chronic back pain
- Migraine headaches
- Insomnia
